Situated on the former site of Lewis Merthyr Colliery, once one of the most important coal mining areas in the world. The fascinating history of this area is all shown in our film.
Down Into the Rhondda Mines
The film starts off with a look through the history of the Rhondda Valley. We then head underground into the mine and listen to those who used to work there, before it closed in 1983, talking us through the past, the highs and lows of mining and what it was all for, coal. These mines were as deep as the Empire State Building, so there is plenty to learn.
We shot our own drone 360 footage of the area, highlighting the mass scale of area the mines posses. Inside the mine, we used a VR cameras to capture the dark and cramped conditions. By attaching our 360 camera to a cable line across the roof of the tunnel, we pulled the camera through the shaft as the tour guide talked and walked you through, creating a feeling of being underground with them.
Due to the nature of the site, some parts of the attraction can be difficult to access. With the VR experience this has now become more accessible to more people.
The VR experience allows the viewer to experiences sights not normally seen by anyone such as amazing 360 birds eye view aerial shots .
We’ve created a Welsh and English version of the tour for both locals and tourist to enjoy. We enjoyed learning about Rhondda’s history, and now plenty more will do too with the VR tour.
