Plymouth History Centre Model.
The “old” museum and art gallery on Plymouth’s North Hill is growing into the Plymouth History Centre. The museum is taking over the space the city centre library has occupied since the 1950s, located next door to the museum – this space and a new extension around the back in Tavistock Place will transform the museum. The library moved to its new home on Mayflower Street in March.
Mayflower 2020 Celebrations
And talking of The Mayflower the Plymouth History Centre will open to the public in the spring of 2020, the opening will coincide with the Mayflower 2020 celebrations, marking 400 years since the sailing of The Mayflower, and the pilgrim fathers epic voyage of discovery to the place we now call The USA.
There are so many stories to tell. The History Centre will shine a light on them all and make them available to the people and visitors of Plymouth in a way that has never been seen before.
Plymouth has a rich and colourful history featuring pirates, pioneers and military might. Peppered with fascinating stories and larger than life characters, much of Plymouth’s great history has national significance well beyond the city’s boundary. Our new super short film show’s how the new centre will look.
The existing facade on North Hill opposite Plymouth University will remain. Tavistock Place around the back will be transformed into a pedestrianised space. St Lukes across the road will be the home to the new art gallery.
