The Power Of Creativity For People Living With Dementia

It was a a great pleasure to have the opportunity to work with The Box to document an "Arts and Minds" creative session for people living with dementia. The Box is running the sessions to help to improve the lives of people living with dementia.

Connections: Arts and Minds

Creative activities and cultural opportunity sessions are being offered to people  living with dementia in Plymouth.  Run by The Box, the gatherings  provide an environment  where people can make new connections, meet new friends and share ideas and stories.   The sessions are free and are run in a warm and welcoming space. The new programme “Connections” opens up The Box’s collections and exhibitions to focus on improving the wellbeing of people living with dementia. Making Connections

For the crew it was a privilege to meet with the group. They told us about the unique opportunity the sessions allow. For those living with dementia it is place where they can connect with the past and present though objects in the museums collections, while using art to creatively express themselves. For the carers it is an opportunity to attend a group with a friend or loved one, where all the attendees are included in the activities. This particular project involved taking inspiration from  the “Dutch Flowers” exhibition at the museum and then working with dried flowers to collaboratively create a wonderful collage with a plan of putting it on display in a prominent position within The Box.

Being able to take part and capture this wonderful session was a joy. Listening to the stories of the participants and watching creativity come to life put a real smile on our faces. This project was SoundView’s Jamie’s favourite video of 2023. This is what she had to say;

” Dementia was not something I was really familiar with or knew a lot about. We have produced a lot of The Box’s films over the last year but this one entailed working closely with the team to make sure I was educated on dementia and gave me the opportunity to learn about how creativity can help cognition, not something I would have thought about before. Watching the attendees faces light up and listening to them recalling memories was really magical and I am so grateful to have been able to participate in it. ”
