Cinnamon buns and a cancelled shoot – My first days as an intern with SoundView

In this blog post, Ceri takes us on her journey from student to intern with Soundview. Find out what she got up to during her first week.

Where it All Began

If you’re a student like I am, you’re probably used to career sessions. Perhaps you have memories of building bridges out of straws and taking personality tests all in the name of team building. Hang in there until you get out of theory and into the practice – for me, this was a marketing internship with Sound View Media. I’m Ceri  and I’ve always enjoyed working in the media industry since landing my first radio show at fourteen. Coming to the end of my studies in English and Creative Writing, I was looking to use my straws to bridge the gap between education and employment. The internship spoke of going on location, editing footage and invitations to events, with the task of writing blogs about the experience.

Why SoundView?

I was impressed by the company’s values and ethos regarding sustainability and inclusivity. It is important to feel safe, protected and valued when you’re out in the big wide world. I hadn’t had an interview since I was eighteen and I was a bag of nerves about the whole ordeal. But it turns out the team were so lovely that I didn’t need to worry. Here I am now writing my first piece as an official employee with SoundView, in their cosy office typing away on a MacBook Pro, which is much nicer than the computer I have at home.

Every employment opportunity requires relevant experience and in my case, this was greatly influenced by my year abroad in Gothenburg, Sweden. During my time there I was fortunate to be involved with many different community projects, including Gothenburg West Pride, Gothenburg Fringe Festival, and Erasmus Student Network: a student-led organisation for which I wrote blog posts about my adventures. The team expressed interest in this and asked to read some of my pieces off the back of the interview, which contributed to my being selected for the internship.

What I’m Looking Forward To

Unfortunately, my first experience of working on location came to an abrupt end when we had a last-minute cancellation. I wanted an authentic experience so weirdly I’m getting exactly what I signed up for. Keep an eye on Soundview’s blog page over the coming weeks to see what I get up to – everything crossed for another shoot!

If visual learning is more your style, wait with bated breath for a video diary about my time at SoundView. Previous interns have also been encouraged to document their journey online – watch Kelsey’s video diary here.

Finally, the office is conveniently located right across the street from a bakery and certain people might get an employee discount! The cinnamon buns came highly recommended.
