The need for blood isn’t new, the NHS has rallied for years to increase the number of donors. All types of blood are needed particularly the O-negative type. It’s used for medical emergencies, air ambulances and emergency response vehicles carry O-negative blood because anyone can be given it; Chris turns out to be one of the 13% of the O-negative blood donors who form the lifeblood of the emergency services.
“Everyone, if able to, should consider giving blood. It really is a straightforward process that takes less than ½ an hour every 3 months and you get free biscuits for your effort! I realise some people are not comfortable with needles or the idea of giving blood but the staff at the donation sessions are brilliant, they put you at ease and there is never any pressure to donate.
It’s easier than ever to donate, there is a phone app where you can search for local blood donor sessions and sign up for a time and place that suits you. The app also has your blood group, which you will find out once you have given blood for the first time.
The best part of giving blood is not the badges or trinkets to say how many donations you’ve given, it’s the letter that tells you which hospital received your blood, so you know it’s going to help somebody whose life may depend upon your donation. “
Chloe and Jamie have also recently signed up to donate blood for the first time. “It’s something a lot of people keep putting off but we think it really important to commit and know that what you are doing, is helping people”. I’m sure their experience will be told soon.
Every time you donate, you can save up to 3 lives and all it takes is 10 minutes of your time. So what are you waiting for? Sign up today to start your blood donation journey – www.blood.co.uk
