Chance of a Lifetime: Video the Falkland Islands

We are lucky in our line of work because we get to go to some fantastic destinations. From Dorset peaks over looking the Atlantic Ocean to beaches on Cornwall's epic North Coast. From Devon's stunning Dartmoor Tors to Somerset's epic gorges. In fact, our 4K aerial video for Visit England meant we flew over the South West's finest sites. So we're lucky, we admit it.

And we are feeling particularly lucky right now because we are preparing for the working trip of a lifetime. We are busy packing as much kit and as few clothes as we can. We can’t exceed our baggage allocation, whilst making sure we’ve got everything we need for a job we are really excited about. Yes, we are off across the world to the Falkland Islands, where we will be creating a series of videos that celebrate this amazing and unique tourist destination.

The Falkland Islands Tourist Board will be using the videos as part of a marketing campaign. They plan to use video to give potential visitors an insight into what awaits visitors to the Falklands. And to capture a true sense of what’s on offer,  we will visit as much of the islands as we can.

The Falklands

This fantastic archipelago is made up of lots of islands, with two larger land masses forming East and West Falklands. Stanley, the capital, is on the North of the East Island. This is the most densely populated town. Surrounding the Falklands are thousands of miles of unspoilt beaches. Oh, and the most spectacular wildlife. We hope to see and video five types of penguins, including King Penguins, as well as Elephant Seals, Dolphins and if we are luckier yet again, Sei Whales and Orcas.

The Falklands is a magnet for photographers, many attracted by bird and wildlife, as well as its stunning scenery. Hiking and fishing are very popular with tourists, and visitors are also attracted by the Islands’ eventful past. This can be appreciated at the various museums and commemorative sites. Similarly Falkland’s culture is unique and offers a walm welcome with cosy accommodation and great food and drink.

Our videos will feature the amazing experiences on offer. The aim is to capture  as many of the amazing sights (and sounds) as two camera operators can capture in a couple of weeks. We also plan to use our 360 VR camera to capture video that gives a real sense of what it’s like to be there. We know that cruise companies are using this technology to promote destinations. And as cruise liners regularly visit the Falklands,  it makes perfect sense to film the islands in 360 VR.

Preparations

We were informed just before the New Year that we had been successful in our tender for this prestigious work. Since that time the excitement in the office has been palpable. Cameras have been weighed, drones dismantled and reassembled, tickets bought and accommodation sought. There are two ways to fly to the Falklands, one via Chile, the other via Cape Verde. Our journey takes us via Cape Verde. Its summer in the southern hemisphere, so it’s the best time of year to travel. Having done lots of research and spoken with the Tourism Department, we are really looking forward to seeing the islands for ourselves. We will let you know how we get on when we get back.
