Filming at ‘Breaking the Mould’ exhibition – The Box

The 'Breaking the Mould' exhibition is the latest from The Box that showcases sculptures created by women since 1945.

About the Exhibition

Breaking The Mould is an exhibition that surveys over 75 years and is split into 3 categories; figured, formed and found. The sculptures were made to challenge art stereotypes by using uncommon materials or materials commonly associated with male artists such as steel.

Some also stood against institutional bias by creating art for alternative spaces or public sites. In British history, sculptures has commonly been seen as a male occupation so in the past women’s work has been pushed aside away from the limelight.

The exhibition is found at St. Luke’s, located just outside the main entrance to The Box, and The Levinsky Gallery, opposite the museum located at Plymouth University.

What did we enjoy about the exhibition?

We found the space really open and airy which allowed for a lot of creative energy to flow, it also made for beautiful light to film in. Being among the sculptures and walking around them allowed us to truly get an understanding and feel for the meaning behind the exhibition.

We really loved how every piece of artwork felt truly unique and an experience in itself. The highlight of woman-focused artwork from a time it was hidden away is such an important and key part of history, one that is an honour to be shown in Plymouth.

What were we doing at the exhibition?

Soundview was asked to create a ‘meet the curator’ film for The Box, which gives the audience great insight into the exhibition. We got the opportunity to interview Natalie Rudd, who is a former curator for The Arts Council. It was really eye-opening to learn about the history behind British sculpture and how this exhibition empowers women. It is something we hope to see more of!
