Net Zero: Standby to Action

To address the climate emergency, in 2022 we took a huge leap forward by committing to Net Zero. One year on, we have Albert certified carbon-neutral productions under our belts and we're reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. Here's how.

Taking the First Step towards Net Zero

The climate emergency is one of the biggest challenges we all face. As a statement that can sound scary and insurmountable but in reality, we can make a difference. Last year, SoundView decided to commit to reducing our consumption of greenhouse gases. We officially declared a climate emergency and committed to becoming net zero by 2030. If the promise is the easy part, putting a plan in place and acting on it may seem more tricky, but once we got started there was no looking back.

Our Aim

Climate headlines inspired us to aim for a sustainable future for all. As a business we wanted and needed to reduce our carbon footprint. This aim and our subsequent commitment were turbo charged by our  Low Carbon Devon intern, Kelsey parsons, who we were lucky to have as part of our team in 2022. And it is without a doubt that she was instrumental in changing our approach to net zero, helping us understand how to run our business for the better and it was also Kelsey who coined our very apt sustainability motto:

“Every pixel is a part of the bigger picture.”

Changes for Good

One of our first steps towards net zero was a comprehensive carbon audit. We needed to find ways to reduce our carbon footprint, so we looked at our production processes. Whether general consumption or individual projects, we found ways to minimise impact. By thoroughly assessing our operations, we streamlined and found key areas where emissions could be minimised or eliminated. For example, we reduced waste, recycled equipment and use more energy-efficient equipment, as well as prioritising reusable resources.

Other steps were really simple and had added benefits. Encouraging everyone to bring in their lunch and car share was a definite win-win for the environment and our pockets. We now compost our food leftovers to reduce waste, and in the summer grow tomatoes and wildflowers, benefitting us and the bees.

How We Work with Others to Reduce Their Impact

For individual productions, we offer our clients the opportunity to gain an Albert Carbon Neutral Sustainable Production certificate. Again, many of the steps here are straightforward. Reduction is key: reducing car usage and waste, prioritising reusable resources, and minimising our impact whilst on location. At the same time, our in-house Albert expert records carbon consumption, with offsetting as the final step towards a certificate.  Our Albert-certified productions achieve both artistic excellence AND environmental responsibility.

Transparency

We also understand the importance of transparency in our journey towards net zero, so we document any greenhouse gas emissions we generate. With this record, we can track our progress, and pinpoint areas that need improvement which means that we hold ourselves accountable to our net zero targets.

In addition, we have created an environmental policy to guide us. From waste reduction to responsible resource management, we are weaving sustainability into the very fabric of our operations.

The Future

Our declaration of a climate emergency was a call to action and we are a year into a journey that has already had so many benefits, including the main benefit: taking action to address climate change. We look forward to a future of continued commitment, improvement and collaboration to reduce our carbon footprint. So we say: Bring it on net-zero!
