Our films are part of an educational resource used by schools across the UK. They explore whether young people feel free to be themselves online and how they manage their online identity. The videos also consider how the internet shapes what they think of themselves and others. We presented these important questions to young people across the UK whilst on tour with the Safer Internet Team.
On Location for Safer Internet Day 2020
Watched by students and parents all over the country, the videos need to represent their audience. So we took to the road (and skies). First stop: Cardiff in Wales then onto Edinburgh. A drive from Scotland to Manchester and finally a hop to Belfast, Northern Ireland then home. Seven schools in four cities over four days-not bad! We definitely enjoyed travelling for Safer internet day 2020, till next year!
The Films
Part of the educational package available to schools, the films are aimed at different age groups. Students can access them on Safer Internet Day, and they stimulate conversations all over the UK. Each film takes a look at online identity. For young people aged 5-11, the theme is ‘What Does my Avatar Say about Me’. We visited a number of schools to create the avatars with the students. Another video aimed at 11-18-year-olds explores the question of whether people are free to be themselves online. Finally, there is a film for parents and carers about the best way to talk to young people about online safety. For this, we asked the experts-the young people themselves. Once again, as in previous work with the Safer Internet Team, we were really impressed by the eloquence and attitudes of the young people featured in the films.
