The Power of The Hero Video
A hero video packs a punch, hence the name. Short, sharp and snappy, it explains what’s great about your business. Every single shot needs to be exceptional and tell an important element of your story. We recommend about 30 seconds, which isn’t much “air time” so for a hero video, it’s all in the planning.
Firstly, sit down, map out or storyboard what shots you think you’ll need and how they tell your story. Each shot will only be 2 -3 seconds in duration so for a thirty-second sequence you’re probably only thinking about a dozen shots. Here are some things to consider:
- What story do you want to tell?
- What key elements do you want to portray?
- Think about shots that will grab your viewer’s attention.
- Are you featuring people or products or a combination?
- How important are location, weather and light?
- Do you need a different video for different times of the year?
- How does the film fit with the style and feel of the rest of the website?

Why should I have a hero video?
ENGAGEMENT: No one disputes the power of video marketing but a hero video does a very specific job. First and foremost it is eye-catching. It draws visitors to your site and keeps them there. We know how important it is that people stay and explore when they land on your home page and hero videos are a really neat way of providing that impetus -great for SEO.
CONTEXT: Next, the hero video tells your story in a way that words alone cannot convey. Made up of a series of shots it explains what you do and why it is great. It uses powerful imagery to show the quality of what you offer effectively.
TRUST: Finally, a Hero video can help build brand awareness and make you memorable. Choose the right shots, and your customers or clients will not only get a sense of your business but remember those key elements.
Don’t just take our word for it!
Soundview has produced many hero videos. We know they work particularly well for destinations, tourist attractions and hospitality businesses. Strong, enticing images are the key to their success.
Take, for example, our film for Visit Truro the self-styled “great little city”. They wanted to convey the range of activities on offer to visitors to Cornwall’s county town, as well as a sense of a place to relax with its green and blue spaces.
The English Riviera wanted a faster-paced video showing that sense of adventure and family-friendly holidays whereas Visit Devon wanted to highlight natural beauty to match their slogan ‘England’s Natural Playground’ and feature Devon’s highlights.
The story that you want to tell will depend entirely on your target audience and how you will attract visitors and customers. Here are our top tips: be creative and enjoy the process. Good luck!
