Junkerry’s Together Apart – 360 film UK Premiere

Soundview's experience of Junkerry's 360 film premiere "Together Apart"

360 Media

It’s such a privilege to have Europe’s largest immersive dome right here on our doorstep in Plymouth. The opportunity to experience fresh and innovative immersive content without having to travel to bigger UK cities is something that we relish. The latest show to premier at The Market Hall‘s fifteen metre dome did not disappoint, and there was a double celebration with the marking of the dome’s third birthday.

Junkerry

Junkerry’s “Together Apart” is an immersive feast composed in spatial audio with bespoke visuals by award-winning artists. And it’s that use of spatial audio, utilising the power of the dome’s 19.1 surround sound system that brings this film alive. To heart the music, lyrics and sounds coming at you from all corners of the dome is an audible delight. The musical score itself is extraordinary. Junkerry occasionally abandons the traditional 4/4 time signature in her composition to great effect, bringing a sound bath to cleans the audience.

Together Apart

So to the visuals, with four different artists taking on chapters of the story. Each have their own visual style and concept. From dancing alien like creatures, to emerging from a cave entrance floating above the ocean, to exploring a labyrinthine urban environment, there are many different journeys and paths to take. Production began in 2020 with interviews from a diverse array of contributors. Their words shaped exploration into themes of belonging, loneliness, inclusion and togetherness. With those insights, Junkerry wrote the 55 minute score in five chapters, collaborating with ten international musicians.

In a world where we increasingly absorb culture alone, “Together Apart” offers a meaningful shared experience. Some people in the Q&A that followed the hour long performance likened the show to a psychedelic experience, and ultimately that is what immersive cinema is attempting to achieve – take audiences on journeys to different world and realms to escape the world in that moment – together, yet apart.
